About Hans B. Thorelli

Hans B. Thorelli

Professor Hans B. Thorelli (1921–2009) was a pioneering scholar whose work fundamentally shaped international marketing research and education. He directed the first representative study of consumer experience in a developing country (Thailand), providing groundbreaking empirical evidence about consumer behavior in emerging markets. At the University of Chicago in 1964, he created the International Operations Simulation (INTOP)—the first marketing-oriented simulation designed to teach international business decision-making, which was widely adopted in business schools worldwide. Serving as Distinguished Professor of Business Administration Emeritus at Indiana University, he authored over 100 articles and 11 books spanning marketing, international business, strategic management, and public policy. His career exemplified the integration of rigorous scholarship with practical application, bridging academic research and business education in ways that continue to influence the field today.
